This 5th magnitude star was named La Superba by Angelo Sechii, a 19th Century Italian astronomer, as a consequence of its deep red colour, which is brought out well by binoculars. Y CVn is a star that is near the end of its life, and shows carbon in its atmosphere. It is variable over about half a magnitude with a period of 158 days.
