Cr 399 lies 5° S of α Vulpeculae and 4° NW of α Sagittae.

Even small binoculars will reveal the ten stars that give this asterism its common name. Because of this shape, the Coathanger makes a popular star-party piece. Its 1.5° span can be held within a 5° field of view for sufficiently long periods in mounted binoculars to permit several consecutive observations.
